“In order to determine whether the germs that remain on the hands despite disinfection are really able to produce feverish diseases in the puerperium, comparative series were established in the clinic. Over the course of one year the students examined alternately one labouring woman with sterile rubber gloves, and the next without them.  In this way [the effects of ] hazards and variations in infectious virulence (genus epidemicus), which play a role from time to time, were excluded. 

This resulted in a barely noticeable difference in morbidity:
9.8 per cent of 224 women examined without gloves experienced fever during the puerperium,
7.1 per cent of 197 women examined with gloves experienced fever during the puerperium.”
